Here's a great link with all the Topo maps ever made by the USGS from 1880 to the present. This information was previously published, but it's more user friendly now.
http://ngmdb.usgs.gov/maps/TopoView/

For instance, you can look up all topo maps for Mesa AZ. In this instance, from 1913 to the most recent topo.  They even have photo ortho quads in there.

I can't figure out how to use this!  I could sure use a Topo map of the Truckee, California area in 1940.

Don,
Bummer you can't access the maps. (I wonder if your computer needs a Flash player update.) I copied a few of the Truckee maps and put them in a DropBox folder for you. One of the topo maps is form 1932, the other is from 1955.  These files are fairly large, so may take a few minutes to download. Chris McD
