Here is a puzzle for you all. Found this part at a P-47D Thunderbolt crash site. Most likely yellow painted letter or number from side of aircraft. Any guesses to what it is??? found drawing of P-47 aircraft with side yellow letters. first part photo shows scale.

About 6" wide; maybe part of the serial from the fin? (Not to give too much info away, but is there a 5 in the serial?) Should be possible to line up that rivet hole with a good closeup photo of a T-bolt fin.

Fragment was Identified as part of the number “5”. It was most likely part of the aircraft’s serial number from the vertical tail. The number 5 is used twice in P-47D aircraft serial number 42-75495. This was further confirmation that I used to ID the correct crash site. Story coming soon about the investigation.
