I went for a hike in the woods at the end of the Ramstein AFB Germany runway. I looked down into a ditch and I found...A piece of aircraft sticking up trough the mud. I pulled it out and turn it over. Low and behold it was a piece of an F-16 near the cockpit.
DANGER EJECTION SEAT panel found near Ramstein AFB Germany. The panel matches the left hand side of F-16s based at Ramstein AFB up to about 1992 time frame when they went to a light grey color warning triangle symbol.
The fragmented letters next to the warning triangle would read if complete:
WARNING: THIS AIRCRAFT CONTAINS
A CANOPY REMOVER CONTAINING
AN EXPLOSIVE CHARGE
The panel was found at this Google Earth coordinate: 49°26'7.58"N 7°38'7.25"E
everyone is welcome to come here and help search for more.
The location is near the end of the runway, but also very close to a major highway. I have been unable to find any F-16 jets that crashed at or near Ramstein AFB. The part may have fallen off a truck on the highway as it passed over a bridge after it departed the base. There have been several F-16s assigned to Ramstein AFB that have crashed in Europe.
If anyone has info concerning F-16 accidents at Ramstein AFB Germany please let me know.
