I first learned about this crash site a few years ago after a friend hiked to Charleston Peak and told me about a plane crash site she passed near the summit. Since then I found out that it was a C-54E that was on a flight from the Lockheed Skunk Works in Burbank , California . I was always interested in the site, but never thought that I would go there due to distance and altitude gain it would take to reach it. But last weekend was Sooz’s birthday and she always wants to do camping/hiking trips for her birthday. I knew that she was going to want to climb peaks, something that I got burned out on doing a few years back, but since she is a good friend I told her I would join her along with the two others going on the trip. I was really happy when she told me that she wanted to do a trip to Nevada and one of the peaks was going to be Charleston Peak . I didn’t want to hike all the way to the peak even though it was only half a mile further and 400 feet above the crash site. I preferred to spend the extra time at the crash site which is at 11,400 feet while the others continued on to the peak. Still the hike to reach the crash site ended up being a 17 mile round trip with a 4,200 foot gain. Lately I been a lot more careful about giving clues on the locations of sites I visit. But the C-54 crash site on Charleston Peak is so well known in the hiking world since the trail passes by it and information is already available on it’s location, I went ahead and gave details and showed some of the great views in the area. Excellent trip and photos Joe. Let me know if you decide to profile the TWA DC-3 that crashed on Mt. Potosi near Las Vegas, NV. It would be a privilege to go on that hike with you.

Great pictures and report Joe. That must have been quite a hike. The heavy part that looks like it isn't from the plane looks like a trolley setup. It must be from the recovery. I have used a similiar system, but with one pulley, on a heavy wrecker. Dennis

Thanks guys, I was a little worried going into this hike. The main thing is wasn't sure about was how I was going to handle the altitude, but it turned out okay.Mike, DC-3 site been on my list for a couple of years now, don't have set plans on doing it, but if and when I do I'll let you know. I'll note it in the info I have on the site so I'll remember that you are interested in going.

There is SO much more at this site than just at the top. If you walk down into the super steep gully, you will find motors, propellers, wings. There is A TON down there.
