Reminds me of the day I was out on the line at NAS Fallon and an A-6 jettisoned a full load of bombs on the runway just like the F-16. I had my back to the runway at the time and did not get to see it, my friend I was working with about jumped out of his skin. I'm not sure if they were live or blue bombs.

I'm not sure who does release and control checks in the Air Force but I bet their butts are on the line right now. I'm sure they will be the first looked at, but not the last.

With an emergency jettison the arming wires are not suppose to be retained, thus the bomb will not arm and go off. BUT the bombs should not have had time to arm even that low. I thinks it might be a bad set of circumstances all coming together. To bad in most military circles some has to be wrong and take the blame.

Just thinking out loud...

Maybe the folks worried about the base being so close to their house have it backwards! I think the house they bought is close to the base! More stupid people attacking an airport after moving next to one.

I was stationed at Hill AFB 1951-52. I remember being told that during WW II a bomber dropped some 100 # practice sand bombs on some buildings along west aproach to EW (9) runway. I remember seeing the roofing patches. Was told they were officer's quarters. Think one was the base hospital when I was there.

I also witnessed a mid-air collision of a F-86 and B-26 directly over field. If you are interested in that contact me.

After reading the article, it seem there is much confusion relating this incident. The article states that he was taking off, the Master Arm switch would never be in the "ARM" position. Next It is almost guarnteed that since there was an engine out condition, the pilot rammed his finger through the frangible cover over the Emergency Stores Jettison Switch and punched off all stores firing the stores ejector cartriges. This meant that the external tanks would go and any of the MAU-12 racks that had ejection cartriges in them would have also released their stores in a "safe" condition.
The bombs could only be released armed if the pilot selected "ARM" on the MFD and selected the proper release for both bombs, a highly unlikely scenario. The fuel tanks may have exploded on impact, but I would be surprised if the bombs could have detonated since neither of the arming solenoids on the bomb racks had been energized. Just my opinion.

My brother works on Hill AFB 1.5 miles from where the jettisoned weapons and fuel tanks impacted in the munitions storage area.   He sent me this link which has more current news, mainly that they detonated a 500lb bomb 17 feet underground, good video coverage of it:  http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=148&sid=8433846

The incident created a huge traffic jam when the base closed the gate near the incident around afternoon rush hour.  They were lucky no one was hurt, unless the pilot was gracious enough and good enough to "bomb" the munitions storage area rather than a populated area.
