Wreckchasing/Aviation Archaeology Symposium
June 20 • 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Moffett Field Museum (Directions below)
Cost: $20 advance • $25 door

Wreckchasers and Aviation Archaeology enthusiasts will gather on Saturday, June 20, at the Moffett Field Museum in Mountain View, Calif., to examine the state of the discipline, discuss the pros and cons of forming a national governing body, and to hear from leaders in this field.

The day-long symposium will be moderated by Nicholas A. Veronico, coauthor of Wreckchasing: A Guide to Finding Aircraft Crash Sites as well as Wreckchasing 2: Commercial Aircraft Crashes and Crash Sites (www.wreckchasing.com). Speakers for the symposium include:

• Craig Fuller, archaeologist and proprietor of Aviation Archaeological Investigation and Research (www.aviationarchaeology.com), will discuss the state of the hobby, how it got started, and the differences between wreckchasing and aviation archaeology.

• Marin Municipal Water District Ranger Matt Cerkel will cover the laws protecting aircraft crash sites, how to protect these resources, and how to interpret the sites and educate the public and other government bodies.

• Brian D. Richardson will update attendees on The North American Institute of Aviation Archaeology (NAIAA), which was founded in 2006 as part of the Colorado Aviation Historical Society. NAIAA is an educational and scientific organization dedicated to the promotion of historic aviation as a specific discipline in the field of modern archaeology. NAIAA is the only all-volunteer, non-profit organization singularly devoted to development of novel research concepts and technology, cost-affordable educational opportunities, as well as promotion of this endeavor as a scientific discipline.

• Writer, director, and producer Jennifer Powers of the Bent Star Project will be on hand to discuss her documentary The Last Flight Home about Dr. Pat Scannon’s efforts to search for MIA crews in the Palau Islands. Powers will screen a 15-minute clip of the film. Details about The Last Flight Home can be found at: http://www.lastflighthome.org

• Pat Scannon, M.D., Ph.D. will present his work finding lost aircraft and MIA airmen in the Palau Islands (www.bentprop.org). The Bent Prop expeditions are all-volunteer efforts and are self-funded. Scannon’s work has been chronicled in the film Last Flight Home (www.lastflighthome.org).

• The X-Hunters — Peter Merlin and Tony Moore, authors of X-Planes Crashes: Exploring Experimental, Rocket Plane, and Spycraft Incidents, Accidents, and Crash Sites (Specialty Press.com, 2009) will be on hand to discuss a number of crash sites they’ve visited from the XB-49 Flying Wing, to the X-1A, the XB-70, and a squadron of SR-71s, YF-12s, and more.

• There will also be a discussion as to whether or not to form a national governing body, what its goals and objectives should be, as well as how to organize and fund such an organization.

Note that other speakers will be added as they are confirmed. Advance reservations are strongly recommended. The symposium fee ($20 in advance or $25 at the door) covers coffee and a roll in the morning, a sandwich lunch, name tag, and admission to explore or a guided tour of the Moffett Field Museum.

Nick,
Thanks for going through all the effort to organize this meeting. I know that putting something like this together isn't easy. I hope that it is the beginning of something very good.

Joe, bring those metal parts of yours up here and enjoy the program. Maybe we can devote some time to sharing scars!

So everybody wants to know what the symposium was like. Here is a photo, I felt right a home, like I was in the Navy again at my old station.
They even had the golden parachute!
Thanks for putting on the event Nick!

hey there - i wasn't able to make the symposium and was wondering if there was going to be any sort of report on what was accomplished?
is there a new organization in the works? a board of directors? a cool patch?

inquiring minds what to know.

Pete -

Here's my quick report (and it's an unoffical one), we had some great information swapping about past work, etc. At the very end of the day, some dialog was started in how we could create synergy from each other's independant efforts and if the need existed and how that need could be met (board of directors, information management, etc) if necessary.

We also quickly discussed building stronger relationships with NPS, BLM and other valuable partnerships to raise awareness of the cause
In the end, I think the common theme was the need to continue the discussions at length sometime in the near future.

Again, these are my own personal thoughts and may not reflect the opinions of the others in attendance.

Hi Pete,

Actually there is a lot going on behind the scenes. I just got back yesterday from close to two months of solid traveling dealing with aviation archaeology related items. In addition to the symposium in CA, I was at one in CO and another in NM.

In general, most thought the CO AvAr offered a model to work from, though the details are still being debated. The CO group is talking about hosting another symposium in the near future to continue the discussion.

Seeing you are in the Bay Area you should come up to my office in Rohnert Park and we can talk shop.

Cheers,

Craig

Greetings,
There will soon be a wrap-up from the seminar, where a lot was accomplished. We had a great panel of speakers, letters from some notables in the hobby written to the group, a great -- but too short -- discussion, and made plans for the next two meetings that may involve special access to some very historic wrecks. And no, a great opportunity was NOT missed. There are a number of things happening that are not visible to everyone on the board. However, they will be soon.

Unfortunately, I left on a series of trips for my job the Monday after the symposium. I phoned Craig when I got home this week to tell him that I was back and was going to get some sleep. My intention was to work on the write-up this weekend, but today, Friday, 45-minutes before I left for the weekend I got travel orders. So, I'll be a little longer in putting up the official review of the meeting.

Thanks for your patience and understanding,
Nick

I want to say thanks to those who put together that event. Theres one thing especially true about wreckchasing; it takes a lot of time and money. Time and money that doesn't come back. All you can hope for is for some good memories, meeting cool people, and paying your respects for those who made history. It would be great to see a organization. It was a great to hear about the success of that event.  I hope I can make the next one.

Once again thank you.
